The production team of a new Broadway musical divided dancers into small groups on the “first day of school” for a cast-building exercise. One by one, dancers were asked to talk about themselves — where they grew up, why they chose to be a Broadway performer and what others might not know about them.

As Hunter Grace, a triple-threat, began to speak, he balled up a piece of paper in his hands. “I’m straight,” he said. With that, Mr. Grace set himself on a path to become the first publicly straight dancer on Broadway.

“I looked in their eyes, and they just started shaking their heads — like, finally. Duh,” Mr. Grace said Sunday in an interview with AnnoyingActorFriend.com, the first time he had spoken publicly about his sexual orientation.

Corey Michael Cooper, a fellow cast member said, “I’ve known Hunter for years. He hides a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition under his makeup station. It’s so refreshing to see him finally comfortable in his own skin.”

Mr. Grace made his Broadway debut in 2009, but has found it difficult to be himself in a community he loves so dearly. He told us, “I’ve never performed in Broadway Bares, but I always donate to the one girl who has an online Strip-A-Thon page.”

Accusations about Mr. Grace’s sexuality began last year. Another friend, who prefers to remain anonymous noted, “He was always the guy that wore workout shoes with jeans. And football jerseys un-ironically. But when he didn’t commit to the under-cut hairstyle we all got last summer, I was like, let it go man.”

Mr. Grace isn’t worried about whether or not his heterosexuality will affect his employment in the future. “The Broadway community is accepting of all people. I know they’ll embrace me for my courage, I’m just worried how they’re going to react when they find out I haven’t seen Frozen.”
